Save Fashion…

…curated by refinery29.com

picture-24-453x300To those familiar with it, NYC’s Port Authority may not scream high fashion, but coming May 1st the transportation landmark will be getting it’s first retail pop-up shop. The temporary space aptly titled Save Fashion, which is sponsored and curated by refinery29.com, will also be part sample sale space with up to 50% off on several pieces- which seems to be a creative and appealing way for designers to recoup their loses from the dismal winter shopping season. During the commencement week, the clothing itself will be mostly be up and coming indie brands like Rachel Comey, VLP, and Boy by Band of Outsiders, to be followed up the second week by more established lines like Acne, Helmut Lang, and Rogan. On the third week, the shop will become an all-men’s space featuring wears by Steven Alan, Bblessing, and Black Fleece.

3,000 mason jar lids…

HANGING FROM THE CEILING…

The ceiling and wall displays are great.  They bring up a lot of childhood memories of my Grandfathers wood shop.  When I was young I remember he always saved all his empty jars (no plastic back then, only glass) and he would screw the lids to the ceiling then fill each jar with random elements (mainly nails, screws, washers, etc.)  I loved working with him in the shop and looking up at the full jars and wondering how many pieces were in each one…

Since then I have always wanted to replicate it in some on in one of our designs.  Maybe on day…

SP Architects designed this “Slow Food Pavilion” - the Pickles & Chutney Pavilion uses elements used in pickling, hanging over 3,000 mason jar lids from the ceiling, with the jars lining the walls, filled with recipes and pictures of pickles from around the world. redesigned; Tiffany & Co

…FLAGSHIP STORE IN TOKYO

news_16

Tiffany

Much like a ring’s setting that securely holds a diamond in place, New York-based Tiffany & Co.’s redesigned luxurious flagship in Tokyo provides the foundation that allows the merchandise to shine—literally. Opening the doors to its new look in November 2008, both the interior and exterior of the store in Tokyo’s Ginza shopping district take their design cues from the diamond itself. “The interior concept was to create a space that was minimal, elegant, open and textured,” says Michael Christ, president of Tiffany & Co., Japan. “Tiffany jewelry emerges as the star in this design, with the interior elements focused on creating a fitting stage that draws customers in and allows them to focus on the beauty of our classic designs.”

The Tiffany Ginza store resides in the Honten building, which opened in 1996 and has undergone minor renovations over the years, but never one as large as the major redesign that began in October 2007. The Honten building has 10 floors (including a basement level), of which Tiffany’s approximately 12,000-sq.-ft. store occupies the bottom three levels with a street-front entrance.

To head up the ambitious task of recreating the iconic brand’s statement in such an important location, Tiffany called upon renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma of Kengo Kuma Associates, Tokyo. “We thought about a residence-like space in a calm atmosphere so that visitors would feel comfortable and relaxed,” Kuma explains. Indeed, customers will feel right at home in the luxe environment, created with rich materials and surfaces, and complemented with a sophisticated lighting design coordinated by Satoshi Uchihara of Tokyo-based Uchihara Creative Lighting Design Inc.
