A Conversation With Chritopher Bettig

What do you look to for inspiration when creating your pattern pieces?

For the pattern work, it’s kind of all over.  Outer space images from movies or from reality, images from Hubble etc., stuff I’ve collected traveling in places like Japan or India… I’ve always been a nerd.  In high school I was studying AP calculus etc. but was really drawn to geometry.  So there was this common thread in everything I liked and was good at that pulled me towards creating things out of simple shapes and having them repeat.  Then when I went to college at the Maryland Institute College Of Art, I studied Mesoamerican art history and Islamic Art & Pattern.  So it’s something I have always been interested in and something I’ve always used to some extent in my art making.

Preview: José Parlá…

…“Reading Through Seeing”

jpletterJosé Parlá’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, “Reading Through Seeing,” (teased) opens on May 14th at Oos Botos Gallery in Hong Kong. In addition to his signature abstract calligraphic paintings and watercolors, the show also includes several of Parla’s beautiful Bizen-yaki pottery (featured) works. This latest series can be summed up in one word: stunning. The most color-rich and vibrant in recent memory, the works are most likely reflective of Parla’s positive expressions of Asia based on his “The New Grand Tour” cultural exchange art project last year.

Titi Freak…

…And His Beautiful Koi Fish

titifreakI am absolutely in love with this latest street installation by Brazil-based Titi Freak. After making his way over to Japan, he’s been keeping himself busy by painting the streets of Osaka for the past three months. Seamlessly coinciding with Japanese culture and landscape, his brightly colored koi fish really sets the bar high for other street artists.

Hamilton Yokota (aka Titi Freak) is a São Paulo native with Japanese ancestry, resulting in a mixture of personal qualities that stem from his combined cultural backgrounds. He has painted in the streets of cities around the world, and his fine art has been exhibited in galleries throughout Asia, South America and Europe. Titi Freak first began writing graffiti in 1995 on the streets of São Paulo, Brazil. His style fuses Eastern and Western cultures, with fashion, pop imagery, illustration, graffiti and comic influences.
