CYCLE KILLER: LANCE ARMSTRONG’S NEW BARRY McGEE TREK MADONE 6.9

NEW BARRY McGEE TREK MADONE 6.9

lb-1

In a racing world where carbon fiber is the holy grail of track performance, San Francisco-based artist BARRY McGEE (aka: Twist) takes us back to the days of cold hard steel with his incredibly unexpected graphic treatment on this TREK Madone 6.9. Created in commemoration of LANCE ARMSTRONG’s competition in the TOUR OF CALIFORNIA for the first time this year, Barry’s signature characters populate a carbon fiber frame masterfully altered to resemble a vintage metal race cycle literally “ridden hard and left out in the rain” one too many times.  One of Lance’s personal favorite artists, Barry was chosen for the task because of his unique aesthetic sensibilities and acute love of cycling, particularly fixed gear riding which have melded here in new and truly unexpected ways. Launched tonite as Lance’s main ride in his public anti-cancer ride in Hollywood tonite, the bike went on display in NIKE’s MONTALBAN THEATER as part of Lance’s public announcement of the new “Stages” art campaign being waged to help expand theLIVESTRONG foundation’s global anti-cancer fight (more news on that coming to ST soon).

CYCLE KILLERS: LANCE ARMSTRONG’S NEW KAWS TREK MADONE 6.9

Pop killer KAWS just put the finishing touches on his new design for Supertouch buddy LANCE ARMSTRONG’s new TREK Madone 6.9 road bike set to roll in the upcoming MILAN-SAN REMOrace. Unveiled tonite at NIKE’s MONTALBAN THEATER by Lance himself, the cycle marks the kickoff of the new “Stages” art bike campaign being waged to help expand the LIVESTRONGfoundation’s global anti-cancer fight. HAVE A LOOK:

KAWS x TREK MADONE 6.9
Designed especially for Lance’s upcoming run in this year’s vaunted Milan-San Remo race, KAWS’ ultra-Pop graphic treatment was created to respectfully infuse a modern aesthetic into a truly classic competition. Employing a vintage style paint scheme as his foundation in honor of the race’s storied 102-year legacy, KAWS then transformed the entire bike into one of his trademark characters with two giant spinning mouths for wheels (Bontrager 5.0s) and a sneering row of teeth snaking across the frame itself. His signature XX eyes appear at key focal points of the frame as subtle reminders of his aesthetic hijacking. Screaming yellow paint was employed to heighten awareness of the Livestrong mission at hand. A painter known for his iconic character design and interventionist tendencies when using existing designs as a base, Lance’s bike proved an ideal opportunity for KAWS to create an unprecedented piece of rolling art. Fun fact: Lance had KAWS hide the legend WNW 2009 “Winners Not Whiners” on the bike’s bottom bracket. It’s Lance’s personal motto tucked out of sight but not out of mind.
